Recently, the forum has been reporting errors. I'm not sure exactly what's going on, as it claims that it can't connect to the forum database, even when the wiki database is fine. I've sent a message to HostDime to prompt them to check their end, but there isn't much I can do from here.
In each case where this has happened, I've been able to make a backup despite phpbb's error, so I'm inclined to think that our database is in fact not going down.
I've done some research into this as time has allowed and I'm beginning to think it may be an issue with the capacity of our shared server. I'm not sure if this is a limitation that HostDime has placed on our account, or if it is the inherent limit of MySQL itself. Google search the error if you want, you'll find that it isn't entirely uncommon even when the database itself is fine.
For now, there's not much else to be done aside from make sure that we take database backups. If you want (read: it's not necessary), you can post the time that you got the message (along with timezone/location) and the browser you are using to access the page.
Also, if someone with more background in php/SQL than I have (*cough* Powerlord *cough*) were to speak up with their thoughts on the situation, I'd appreciate it.

I remember getting a weird error for a short while that was probably this one on June 5. It was a short message that popped up when I tried to access the forum and nothing else. Probably it was this one...

MySQL has a limit on the number of concurrent connections. I don't know if we're sharing that limitation with all the other hosts sharing the same server or if we have our own mysql process and limits dedicated to our databases.
More of a theory than fact, but I do know that MySQL is quite limited in that way, compared to standard SQL databases.

It used to be phpBB would tell you what the real error was, but it doesn't any more... well... phpBB2 doesn't. I think it shows up in the Maintenance tab's Error log section under phpBB3.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was the too many simultaneous connections thing, though.
You could be sneaky and search the phpBB2 source code for the section that connects to the database, and add a line after where it checks for a failure to log the error reason from mysql_error() to a file using error_log(). |

I just got ye olde error again when I tried to post. I hit back, copied my post incase it happened again, and then it posted fine. Pretty weird. (EDIT: Same thing happened on a different post. But not this one!)

Yeah, I got that last night, too. It's the same error that the wiki gives me, but I was able to stop the error on the forum by removing the htaccess file which seems to have been mysteriously modified by unidentified agents.
