Incidentally, I just searched for "galre" on Google Image Search and failed to find any sort of scottish biscuit.

This depresses me. Enormously. Ok, not really.

Anything to forget that I'm a Myspace reject, my life is going nowhere, I'm actually a hollow shell of a human being and all my self-esteem is based on my popularity/opinons my peers have about me.

Is getting drunk cool?
Will be people accept me if I get drunk?
I'm in!

:D Good man.

And if you wanna bring your popularity to yet a higher plane, you should smoke, too! People'll be like, "hey it's Smokin' Joe! He don't take no shit from no one! Erm... y'know... 'cause, like, he smokes. And things. Hell, I wish I was like him, but I guess I'll always be ordinary."

Go get 'em, Smokin' Joe!

Don't encourage me.

Anyway, while I'm entirely sober right now, TMT thinks I should post the story of an adventure I went on on Monday here after relating it via MSN. So here goes.

Went out with the usual group on Monday night to a club in town, and we'd agreed in the taxi that should we get split up, it was every man for himself. Later on in the night, apparently around the time Killing in the Name came on, I was ejected from the club for being too drunk and, having spent all my money within, realised I needed to find a cash machine so I could get a taxi home. (In retrospect, I could have just got in a taxi and asked the driver to take me to one on the way home.)

So anyway yeah, I'm wandering around Manchester at around 1am searching for a cash machine, and for reasons unknown I become convinced that the mafia is after me. With the (probably) non-existant mob in hot pursuit I just keep running, running, running like a constipated wiener dog and find my way onto a building site or something which - gasp! - turns out to be a dead end.

Now obviously I can't go back the way I came in because that's where they're coming from so I'm left with the task of surmounting some metal barriers slightly higher than me. After trying and failing to pull myself up over them (curse this lack of upper body strength), I try rather noisily to knock them down. This fails. I think it's around this point that I was struck by a brainwave and texted an Italian-born friend from uni, so that with the connections that she'd no doubt have she could get the hit called off.

It's worth noting at this point that there now probably exists a security tape for this building site of an intoxicated student dressed rather smartly in a nice jacket and tie being confounded by a fence while nervously glancing over his shoulder and falling over numerous times. Anyway, eventually I manage to find a gap between two of the barriers and make good my escape. I'm now utterly lost though, and like a moth I gravitate to bright lights and any sign of civilisation.

This happens to be a rather posh-looking hotel (if my theory about which it was is correct, it's one of the nicest in Manchester) and, not knowing how I was going to get home and believing there was a price on my head, I attempted to blag a room for the night on credit. This resulted in the degree of success you'd expect. Once again, in retrospect, it would have been a far better idea to ask them if they had a cash machine or to call me a taxi, but that didn't occur to me.

So I leave the hotel still with no idea where I am and in terror of the cement shoes with which I was no doubt about to be fitted. I run around in whatever compass direction my feet take me for a while and, by some miracle I find myself outside my university (it's about 15 minutes' walk from town, IIRC). I go inside (thank you for 24-hour computer suites, Salford!) and ask the reception bloke where the nearest cash machine is, and start off towards it but get the fear and come back.

At this point I'm on the home stretch in terms of getting home, as it's about a 20 minute walk which I do a few times a week, but it's definitely not a walk I'd fancy doing alone in the middle of the night even without paranoia of a fictional mafia. Thankfully, the reception bloke turns out to be an extremely nice man and tells me I can sleep inside, so I find the nearest sofa in the cafeteria and, my quest at last at an end, beautiful sleep ensues. Woke up about 4 hours later when the cleaning lady was hoovering in the morning. Bought a Fanta and some biscuits and made my way home.

And that's the story of the adventure I went on on Monday.

I have trouble believing that tale resulted SOLELY from being drunk and not from ... mushrooms or something too. Laughing

Good story nonetheless.

I know, I was questioning that bit too. See, what puzzles me is that I was definitely sobering up as the tale went on - I have a good memory of everything from the building site onward. So why, then, did it not begin to occur to me that the whole mafia scenario was, well, a little silly? One of my housemates put forward the theory that maybe someone gave me something when I was really drunk - but it wouldn't have been any of my group, and I can't really see why a random stranger would have been handing out drugs free in a busy club. Unless of course they were a date rapist, but I imagine it would have been clear from my state that no further intoxication would have been necessary.

In any case, I think the lesson is that I should probably stop drinking so much. Or at least return to my old invention of the infallible Emergency Tenner™, whereby at the start of the night I stash £10 in some out of the way pocket which is accessible when I need it for a taxi, but registers as off limits for buying drinks.

Alcohol fact: try playing Burnout while drunk. You will do better than you ever have while sober and this will put you off drunk driving for life because you realise that if you ever try drunk driving you will be going for takedowns.

So, question.

I initially moved this to Gobbledygook for being about one notch shy of being spam. To be honest, it really has no place here either (see the guidelines thread in this board, #2). So here's my question: is this thread any kind of legitimate discussion (in which case I'll move it back to Misc.), or shall we let it die?

Whatever happened to happy mediums, Cheese Monkey? I say we let it remain here in Gobbledygook without letting it die.

Orby, in the top thread in this board, wrote:
Keep only one Off-Topic Topic. Contrary to popular belief, much of Gobbledygook consists of game threads with little actual complete insane posting randomness (although The Black Orb will try to tell you otherwise). If you feel like posting something totally crazy and irrevelant to a game thread, do it on the Off-Topic Topic. Keep in mind game threads that appear to have too few boundaries as to almost imitate the Off-Topic topic are not allowed (for example, a "post a random word thread" is not a valid game thread due to its similarity to the Off-Topic Topic).

I'm pretty sure this thread HAD a topic: Alcohol and being drunk. It just departed from that topic. A lot.

But as long as people aren't just using it for flooding, I'd have to agree with Izzhov's earlier post about just letting it live. I've noticed that the Off-Topic Topic often manages to stay on topic for a few posts and no one moves it to Misc or locks it. Razz

Does it really matter that much?

I mean, surely a logical solution would be to leave it and if it holds interest then people will carry on posting in it, in which case it might as well stay around, while if it doesn't then it will die naturally. Much like, er, all the other threads that have ever existed that didn't require round-table discussions on whether or not they should exist.

You guys do realize, with how rarely we have to lock threads around here, every new lock would seem that much of a grave injustice? ;[

Sorry, but I built up an immunity to the "X NUMBER OF PPL LIEK IT = IT HAS A PURPOES LOL" argument a long time ago. Roll Eyes Lune Probably because, y'know, it sucks and there's no logic behind it.
