Cheese Monkey (and occasionally some other administrators maybe, though tbqh it's mostly Cheese Monkey) is always enforcing both written and unwritten* rules, and I think it's high time the administrators compiled a list of all the rules and stuck with 'em. Srsly, if all the rules were written out in a nice, clear, and organized fashion, and administrators only enforced those rules, I do believe that it would reduce much of the tension between Our Gracious Administrators and common swine such as myself that we've been experiencing as of late.

Whaddya think, eh, amirite?

*Examples of unwritten rules: no saying swears which start with an "F", no pube discussion, no writing messages which say "Dear Izzhov: BUTTOCKS BUTTOCKS BUTTOCKS BUTTOCKS BUTTOCKS BUTTOCKS BUTTOCKS From Tommy," no pretending to be another forum member, no posts outside of the OTT which are written in your phoenetic alphabet, and so on and so forth.

extensive lists of rules seem kinda superfluous to me. i feel it mostly just boils down to common sense. it is unfortunate that not more people in the world know what that is.

i say this from the perspective of both the userbase and the forum staff. users should just know what sort of behaviour is appropriate, and administrators should understand that doing everything by the book is kinda silly for a laid back community like this.

Well, we're such a small and tightly-knit community that we all pretty much know what is and isn't okay. If we were the size of, like, GameFAQs or something, sure, a list of rules would be appropriate. But I don't think we really need one here. Major infractions that require severe punishment rarely happen around here.

I think anyone who is genuinely offended by swear words is a moron and I'll probably carry this belief with me to my grave.

However, I'm sure a lot of people disagree with me, so I guess that rule makes sense. Also, most of the other ones basically boil down to anti-spam or flooding.

My only request would be not to lock/delete/otherwise tamper with a thread if there's obviously a lot of interest in the topic and it's not in violation of good taste or any rules. Really, just as though most unwritten rules should be common sense, any action taken by a moderator should be justifiable.

But yeah, I'd say a large listing of rules like this is a bad idea, since people would just try to find creative ways to break them anyway.

I made a topic like this like a year ago. The irony, Cheese Monkey deleted it.

Deleted it? I don't recall the occasion. Razz

I do recall us trying to come up with a set list of rules at the onset of 3.0. Hell, maybe it was 2.0. Long story short: blame everyone else for not being around often enough to put in a bloody opinion. Roll Eyes Lune

In a nutshell: standard flaming/trolling/spam rules apply... we are trying to be family friendly (so I will usually [Censor fairy] the more greivous curse words if I see them)... and follow the board guideline threads for more specific info. Oh, and the more you rant at us about every mundane little thing we do, the less inclined we'll be to listen. So maybe you guys should learn to pick your battles instead of making your threads with an "ITT WE HAET CM" slant. Roll Eyes Lune

I'm dead serious. I've tried to be nice and everyone gets on my back about it. Just like... well, every time. Anger Lune Let me put it this way, evil mods are often self-fulfilling prophecies.

But on a serious note, I really don't take sides in this whole "Rules" thing going on, but if it's in Gobbledygook, you can do some nonesensical things. But, to a point.

Wow. Now I know why Hitler had such trouble creating a perfect people's community. If everyone had kept quiet he wouldn't have had to kill all those Jews. People and their opinions *shakes fist*.

Nice, only seven replies in and Godwin's Law has already been invoked. I think that's some kind of FCMidi record. Razz

Very well, here they are.
Rule#1: The FC MIDI community requires that users do not adorn their soft, young flesh with any items of clothing during posting.
Rule#2: Members caught with silly names—in particular, real-life names—will be made fun of immediately.
Rule#3: Any arguments settled via any means other than a FLUTE-TOOTING COMPETITION are automatically deemed invalid.
Rule#4: The following words are disallowed: "bum", "willy", "poopoo", "weewee", "God".
Rule#5: You break the rules, we break your legs.

?

On a serious note, we're all relatively old/mature people (compared to most internet forums anyway...), why are a lot of swear words "bad" here? You say you want to keep it family friendly (why?) but I wouldn't expect any of us to go on a crazy cuss-out rant or something.

Otherwise, common sense is good. For what it's worth.

When we were setting up 3.0, I brought up the possibility of posting rules. I think the general consensus was that specifics would become too convoluted (think of it like an EULA). The more rules there are, the less often people will read them, too. It's not that we don't need rules either, it's more like we abide largely by rules of common courtesy and decency, which are things that are understood more than expressed. We have posting guidelines in forums, which are about all that really should be said, too.

For the record, it's better to discuss your issues with an administrator's decision, with the administrator themselves. Fail that, talk to a different admin. I think in most cases, we're all willing to discuss things--whether or not it changes opinions is another story. (And if you've got an admin that won't talk to you, let me or TEH DERF know)

Also, I do not imagine CM deleting any threads whatsoever, with the exception of duplicate threads, double posting or some other sort of clear-cut situation. As far as my understanding has gone, he's been pretty good about sticking to the convention, which is to put the thread in the graveyard.

Who's your favourite moderator?

Mine is a split between Dr F and JK9000.

Agreed. Saying 'well this thread has run its course, time for a lock' is silly. It's not as if we lock threads that people don't post in anymore.... I just don't see anything wrong with a thread following the natural flow of conversation and changing topics.

Yeah. As long as the discussion isn't spammy or uncivil or otherwise bad, it ought to be okay. It's likely that someone else might eventually reply regarding the original topic again and return it to its former rails too... e.g. meaning of life thread. It deviated a lot.

Nooooo.... FCMidi needs super strict rules. Oh, and a ban on polls asking who's your favorite moderator.
