Apparently Cheese Monkey misread "Treasury" as "Graveyard".

I hope I don't start misreading "Cheese Monkey" as "bum-face".
That would be dreadful.

PostPosted: Thu May 29, 2008 11:18 am    Post subject: SMASHED YA FLAT XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Reply with quote

I hadn't ever read that before, and now I can't stop laughing. Between that and "Smashed ya flat!" DAMNIT, I'm signing off the forum for today, before I get fired.

Edit: Wait, I thought of something. Several times some really good threads got auto-pwned before anyone had a chance to intercede and save them. Well okay, we had the chance, but we were lazy and forgot - my question is, is there a php functionality that lets you 'tag' threads in such a way that they won't be auto-pruned, even if they go past the cut-off date and haven't got any posts?

I know it's already possible to do this with announcements and stickies. Or at least, I think I know it is. So is there any way to do it without doing either of those things? (Just because it'd force those topics up to the top)

An example of how this'd make a difference is the politics thread - when there was a lull in our political interest, the thread became inactive and died. However, it was a great thread with a lot of interesting debates.. but it wouldn't make sense to lock it and 'treasury' it, because there can always be more added to a political discussion. So instead it just withered on the vine.

If we had the option to 'save' threads, just for a little while longer, it'd mean we wouldn't need to bump them every few weeks out of fear, or immediately treasury them and lock 'em to make sure we don't forget. If the programming doesn't exist, though, it's no probzZzZzZzz.

I support treasuring it, if for no other reason than the educational value of future generations having a shining example of how to take fun far too seriously.

No - I didn't either. But I'm also not planning on attending the Sex and the City movie just to scream "I DON'T ENJOY THIS I'M NOT ENJOYING THIS THAT JOKE WASN'T HUMOROUS", if you catch my pingas.

Well, are you the owner of the theater where Sex and the City is being shown? No? Then that isn't a very good comparison.

1) You don't know that!

2) CM doesn't own anything either.

C) It would have been easier to figure out what you meant if you had quoted his post.

EDIT: Not that you aren't right. A better comparison would be someone who works at a theater turning off the regularly scheduled feature so they can watch a different movie, thereby showing a complete disregard for the patrons of the theater.

I just noticed this - When I said that, I wasn't referring to anything related to ownership or moderation. I was talking about the tendency of some people to go out of their way to make it clear they don't find something funny. This was also not an attack directed at Tommy, but a general comment spurred by his initial remark. He'd asked "does it make me a queer if I didn't find that thread funny?", and I denied his supposed queer-ocity by laying out the terms by which one could be deemed "queer" for such a mindset, and providing an example. I then brought the point around full circle, postulating that anyone who acted in a way I'd just described was, in fact, "gheyyYyYyyYyYYyYy", aka "a queer".

Hope that clears up any confusion.

I'd also like to point out that it was very brazen to assume I wasn't the owner of a theater playing Sex and the City - had I, in fact, been such a person, you'd be caught in a web of lies and treachery, with no way out but down. It seems a large price to pay for such a marginal gain. Shocked

Yeah, you got me there, if you owned the theater, then my point would have been different. Notice different, not invalidated. Do I think the owner of the theater has the right to decide what he wants shown in his theater, and can decide such on any basis? Heck yes. Will he lose money by refusing to show a popular movie just because he personally doesn't like it? Also yes. Therefore, I think it still holds. Razz But paladin is right, CM doesn't "own" the forums, but he does have a say in how they're run.

And I knew you weren't attacking Tommy, Chiz, I thought you were attacking CM, and I was tired of everyone jumping down his throat just for locking a few threads. No harm done, I hope? XD

Mmm, most likely.

I'm in favor of treasury-ing political (or any nice, long debate) threads. The only catch would be that we'd be archiving them as just a memory of the debate which happened already, and we'd still have to allow future debates on the subject - a newbie could come in and want to debate something, and not want to read a four-page, four-month-old thread to do it. Razz

That's a fair point - as interesting as the original politics thread was, it wouldn't really be relevant nowadays, so reading it over and seeing things like "Hmm, Obama might get pennsylvania!" would just seem anachronistic.
