Welcome to the Fruitcake MIDI Forums! (You'll never leave!) We hope you enjoy your stay here, and as much as we'd like to give you full run of the place, we're contractually obligated to point out that there are a few rules by which your friendly neighborhood moderation team would request you abide. So go on, take a seat, have some tea; we won't be long.

General Rules & Content Guidelines

Any forum exists for a purpose, and so does every board within it. Every board on FCMidi (with the exception of News and Announcements) has a guidelines thread which outlines what the board is for. You can also find these guideline threads below:

In general, we hope you will contribute thoughtful and interesting posts to our forum. The Gobbledygook board is a notable exception; its purpose is to facilitate game threads and the famous Off-Topic Topic. If you have an idea for a thread that doesn't fit any of the categories, try posting it on General Discussion (if it's relatively serious-ish) or Gobbledygook (if it's nowhere near serious).

Occasionally, threads posted in Gobbledygook will have no game involved, and will exist only to make a joke or random statement. This is generally not encouraged, as the Off-Topic Topic is designed to catch whatever randomness our forumers have to offer. We do not, however, have any hard-set rule against these "joke threads." The only things to note are:
  • If a seemingly pointless thread is posted outside of Gobbledygook, it will be moved there... unless we can't tell if it's meant to be a joke thread or not, in which case it will be treated like a spam thread and locked.
  • If you plan to post a joke thread, try to put some thought into it. This is true of any good joke. Smile
  • The automatic pruner (see below) in Gobbledygook is set to 60 days, which is generally far longer than a joke thread lasts. With this in mind, joke threads may be manually deleted by a moderator if more than five joke threads are in existance at the same time.
  • A related note is that, once a joke thread has run its course, it is strongly discouraged to "bump" the thread or try to revive it in any way. While serious discussions can often be revived by new content, joke threads are like other kinds of jokes; if you wear them out too much, they're not funny anymore! Enjoy them while they last, and then let them die.

These forums feature an automatic pruner that deletes threads without any new posts after a specified length of time. The pruning measures for each board can be found in their guideline threads (News and Announcements are never pruned). If you believe a thread should be kept even if it has run its course, please visit the Topic Treasury Candidate Program thread to nominate it for the Topic Treasury. Also note that Announcement and Sticky threads are never automatically pruned.

For the sake of everyone's enjoyment of the forums, there are a few behaviors we do not tolerate:
  • Flaming, or blatant insults to a person or a group of people.
  • Trolling, or making posts deliberately intended to anger another person into flaming.
  • Profanity, beyond very mild usages. This is an admittedly gray area, but hopefully you can get a sense of our boundaries by watching what words are used by others. In general, words which are not allowed will be edited out by a moderator, and repeated offenses may result in warnings.
  • Spam, or completely pointless and/or incoherent posting with no discernible purpose (other than to raise one's post count).
  • Any kind of personal attacks, bullying, etc.

Acts of Moderation

From time to time, a moderator may find it necessary to move or lock a thread, edit another member's post, or give out a warning to a member who broke a rule. The warning system is as follows:
  • First offense: Nothing
  • Second offense: Suspension of 3 days
  • Third offense: Suspension of 7 days
  • Fourth offense: Suspension of 1 month
  • Fifth offense: Permanent Ban

A period of two months without a new warning will effectively clear a member of all warnings gained to date, but gaining another warning during this time will reset this counter.

If you feel an act of moderation is in error, you have the following options:
  • Send a PM to the acting moderator, or to another moderator, to make your case.
  • Visit the Site Improvement/Feedback board and make an appeal there. For more details, find the sticky thread named "Appeals System" in the feedback board.

It is never appropriate to fight or ridicule an act of moderation. Such an act can include threads made specifically to challenge the act, or threads made to get around the act (e.g. making a thread identical to a locked one because you personally disagree with the lock). You have two ways to contact us to attempt to set the record straight. Use them. To attempt to circumvent the choices moderators have made in the best interests of the forum defeats the purpose of moderating at all. Therefore, any thread or post made outside of Site Improvement/Feedback to criticize an act of moderation, or the moderator who made it for doing so, will result in a warning, no exceptions.

The moderators for this forum were selected as they are capable of making decisions in the best interests of the forum as a whole. These decisions have been made with the expressed consent of the moderating team, as the issues being addressed in this post have been deemed harmful to the overall health and sense of community in these forums. The moderating team is completely staffed by humans, and they make mistakes from time to time. Bear in mind that, when you post your thread, if it could look like spam, it may actually be interpreted as spam.

With these rules in mind, we hope you'll exercise your best judgment and try to post in a (reasonably) mature manner. We guarantee you'll have more fun that way in the long run, and you'll make everyone's lives easier in the process. Together, we can [s:bee87cf4b7]make the Internet a better and brighter place[/s:bee87cf4b7] have an awesome time on the Fruitcake MIDI Forums. Cool Thanks for reading!

I has a question about the rules. According to your warning system, no one actually gets any warnings. They just get "nothing" and then a suspension.

Uh, the first "nothing" is the warning. You get a little sticker (I think? We still doing the triangle hazard things?) and we talk to you, but no real punishment. We don't silently mark you after the first offense and then dish out an unexpected temp ban, if that's what you're thinking.

Then you're like:

"JK's cool, he won't mind my joke threads and flame wars."

Then he's like:

"Sorry son, have to uphold the law."

Then you're like:

"I thought you were different to all the moderators! I thought you were my friend!"

The he's like:

"Rules are rules." *Shakes head sadly.*

It's as JK said; the "innocence" step from ye olde Handy-Dandy Moderation Guide (R.I.P.) is implied. Whereas "nothing" essentially means "no punishment... this time."

We could still bring back the HDMG, y'know. Razz Though it may or may not be zombified by now.

Basically yeah, the only thing that's changed there are the additions of temporary suspensions. Whereas the old system was just "LOL WARNINGS:2" and such. We can still call 'em warnings. Razz

(If it seems too harsh, remember: we haven't had anyone with two warnings in a long time... IIRC, since 1.0! ROFL Lune )

I think ImMewtwo had three warnings at one point. Oh, and Poopsoda did as well; he was the only one to ever taste the ban-hammer IIRC. Maybe Blank got three warnings too? I'm not sure about him. Those events were somewhere in the vicinity of six years ago, now, so I'm a little hazy on the details.

Man, people were rebels back in the day, I tell you what. Razz

I'm pretty sure it was Blank who was tempbanned, not Poopsoda. Rolling Eyes

Yeah, I know Blank got nailed for it because he was just freaking out about something related to religion. I wasn't on fcmidi at the time, but Upsi posted the thread on KV so we could all come and laugh at him... and we did! (That's when I first joined.)

Posting pictures of sexy womans:

Is it acceptable when they are tastefully covered even if only by censor graphix and their own limbs?

it was a bad idea in hindsight. i came up with the idea because....well i dunno maybe i was bored, but i thought it'd be good to have some way of posting NSFW stuff. the funny thing was that DrF was up for it initially, but a storm of feces soon followed - kicked up by the usual suspects Razz to be honest what i really wanted was just a relaxation of the rules against NSFW stuff. these days that seems to have happened, with people just NSFW-tagging stuff that's got mature content - can't really argue with that, seems the best approach, everybody wins. though i'm not really around enough for it to matter anymore anyway. all the NSFW thread did was result in WOMEN, thanks particularly to joeMK who thought it was hilarious. ah good times.
