You need this module and this plugin to make it work.

Believe me, this sh*t is tough if you don't have Linux.

EDIT: The site is not down, according to my internets.

It's written in perl, which is platform independent, [s:39b220ce4d]so you could probably run it in Winders if you wanted to[/s:39b220ce4d]. Actually, this might require linux... I'd need to dig through the code some more to figure out for sure. They don't actually have any real documentation, so it's kind of ambiguous at this point.

Problem is, you need two things before you can get started--someone has to act as a server (which means a system that's running all the time), and the network has to permit externally hosted bots. If they don't want you putting a bot on their server, they can ban you.

Setting it up is actually the easy part.

Sure, Bucket may not instantly be as far along as xkcdb, but obviously, they didn't start at the top either.

I like the idea of using it until it's annoying enough that we all hate it and vote it out or w/e.

I'm sure Izzhov could host the bot. Does WindFyre not allow external bots?

You definitely need Linux, I've asked people in irc.perl.org/#perl. Although they did say you mightbe able to do it on Windows with Cygwin.

I can leave my computer on all the time if it means we get a Bucket.

The perl code calls for, like, some Linux exclusive .dll's or something. I dunno, go ask the people at #perl.

Cygwin is the answer for running it in Windows. Also, if you use VMware Server, you can run Linux inside Windows. Not really a good idea if you don't have multi-core, though.

I fiddled around with it a bit and I was able to get it to start using Cygwin, but I couldn't figure out how they'd get it to join a server. Documentation is basically non-existent, and any "obvious" configuration variables didn't seem to actually affect anything.

If I can figure out that part I'll say something. Beyond that, it's up to whoever wants to run it and whether your IRC host will allow it.

Yeah, I'll totally run it if you figure out how to config it, then tell me how to do so.

IRC stats? I have a friend who does IRC stats that could idle in our channel, conceivably, though he isn't on 24/7.

If that's what you meant, Lune. I could do it once my connection is more stable also.

Well Powerlord uses Lucia for #vgmusic and #omidia and I think that runs from vgmusic.com itself, so it's always in the channel. It logs all the convo and that can be used to generate stats like this, using some pre-made stat generation ... thing. Perhaps ask your friend. It shouldn't be too hard.

That's exactly the stats thing I'm thinking about, yeah. I don't have an available shell to run a statsbot that will never die, though, and my connection is way too unstable for me to try at the moment. I would ask my friend but I don't like the idea of keeping stats that aren't totally accurate, you know?

If Kevin has a shell he could always use it, I guess...

Wait, so if izz's computer ever shuts off (like cause of a power outage) we'd lose all our status on bucket? Or is it possible to save him so that if he ever dies for some reason, we can bring him back.

Dude I'm getting excited.

Hostile much? You either haven't been paying attention to how Bucket works, are misreading my post, or just want to be Dragon-y.

In any case, that's not what I was saying at all. I was referring to the fact that Bucket has been trained by hundreds of thousands of directives that have created the monster it is today. If a Bucket-like bot ever gets implemented in FCMIDI, it will never reach that level of sophistication as we don't have the user base. Or that kind of base humor, but whatever.

I find it disturbing that you assume that, just because I disagree with you, you think I'm being hostile. Razz

I think it was the way you phrased your disagreement, moreso than the fact that you disagreed with him.

And it's not like it's an isolated incident - I remember when I was talking about how much I like Oblivion, and you said "What are you, a game reviewer?"

To put it bluntly, you may be a brilliant programmer but your people skills could use some levelling! LOL!!!
