Do you like the quiet? I sure do. A quiet city with snow falling.. It gives me shivers, and not just from the cold. Stillness, quiet, solitude.. This is all so amazing to me! Being around people is great sometimes, but often I want to just be alone. Not "alone in my room" alone, but utterly alone -- hike to a beautiful, secluded spot alone.

Even the internet can be a lot of fun when no one is around. Sitting in a dead IRC room with only two other people in the middle of the night; going to a forum where no one is on and will be on for several hours... Even these simple pleasure put a content smile on my face.

What thinks you? Do you like the quiet? Do you ever sit in real quiet, away from TVs, radios, and music? The temptation is always there to ruin a beautiful moment with some music. Sometimes John Cage had it right -- the music should occasionally come from everything around you.

Very rarely do I get to experience true quietness, so I'm way too used to noise. I live next to a freeway, neighbors are always blaring Mexican music on high, cats are whining, fans are rolling, etc...

When I was visiting my relatives in Seattle one time, though, I remember feeling rather depressed one night for some reason or another when I realized that it began to snow outside. I sat out on the balcony and watched snowflakes fall while no noise could be heard whatsoever. Oddly, it made me feel very warm inside. It's one of the few times I've ever experienced absolute silence whilst awake.

Hell yeah, boi! I once took a field trip with my elementary school to this island back when I was still in elementary school, and it was big enough so I could find this secluded spot with no one else around and I just lay there in the sun the whole time.

'Course, this isn't anywhere near as awesome as the total quiet in the snow you described, but I don't think I ever really experienced that tbh. D:

And quiet places on the Internet are really great. There's this one chat room I go to a lot that's occasionally empty expcept for one other person or something, and it's awesome. I'm not going to tell ya the name of the website though because then you'll come and ruin the quiet.

Not always.

Sometimes quiet leads to introspection which scares the Hell out of me.
I'm not joking BTW, I just get stupidly nervy about some things, especially in the evening.

But I am lucky to live right next to the countryside. Sometimes I just go off alone and sit on this big rock that sticks out and watch the rolling hills below (with sheep). Okay, so there's a main road down there and isn't exactly silent but it's on one side of a valley so you can see a long way which is pretty cool (also calming). I haven't done that in a while though. Once I decided to walk to the other side as far as I could see just because.

As for slience on the Internet, I really don't see how that gets the same effect.

I dunno. It tends to be cooler when it's just morning and it's something done in real time, like a chatroom or MMOG and no one's there so you just run around and/or say and do whatever you want and no one will judge you.

Maybe it says something about how much the internet has taken over our lives.

Mm yes. Pure silence is unnerving, but near silence with a touch of natural ambience can be downright wonderful. When you spend most of your time surrounded by the hum of electronic machinery (as we all do), it really clears the mind to go outside somewhere -- the more remote, the better -- and, to use the cliché, "get away from it all".

That's absolutely awesome. Color me envious; I'm a country guy at heart, but I'm stuck in the city for the time being. Sad We're definitely moving someplace a lot more rural, though, when we save up enough money to think about buying a house.

I don't completely agree with that. A quiet chatroom's a bit different from a quiet forest. A chatroom's purpose is (generally) to facilitate conversation; why would you join if you didn't have a desire to converse? A quiet forest is peaceful and beautiful, whereas a quiet chatroom is... well, pointless.

However, as far as MMOGs go: you're absolutely right. I love it when I log on to WoW early in the morning when there are maybe only 3-5 other people from my guild online (compared to ten times that many during peak hours). But, even so, that's only because there are things I can do apart from socializing, things that actually benefit from fewer people being online -- i.e., less competition. Razz I can go kill enemies in areas that are heavily farmed later in the day, etc. So the motive's different.

Yeah, I was gonna say something like this - When I'm in TB at night, or taking a zep ride during a sunset, it's pretty damn amazing.

Also, the city has its moments too. I remember one time I had to get up sooo early to do a training at a school for my job. Naturally the subway was still packed with people, even at the butt-crack of dawn, but I got out somewhere in Brooklyn and when I started walking there was... no one. The only cars on the streets were parked and empty, and there were hardly any people. Occasionally I'd walk past a person, and we'd just kinda smile at each other cause it was so unusual. (Or maybe he just saw me smiling and was like "hehe...okay crazy man....keep walkin...").

But yeah, I always remember that as one of the most beautiful times I've ever been in the city. Btw if you try and emulate this, don't substitute "morning" for "night", you will get mugged like a n00b!

Your snowy city description in either the night on a front porch or something, or a very early morning.. I like night better.. yeah, that gives me the chills and warms me at the same time. I love times like that. I sometimes go outside late at night and just sit out on my porch and reflect. It gives you such an amazing, different feeling, I dunno.

I certainly love the quiet. But I also love listening to music, too, so I say...everything in moderation.

Wow, reading this thread, it makes me thankful that I live where I do. You see, I've like, never lived in a real city tbqh. So silence is something I live with everyday (which is ironic, because I have five brothers all living in the same house).

I guess it's kinda like living with a sweet view (sorta like what Tommy was talking about) right in front of your house (which I do). Most everyone who comes to our house is like, "Aw man! Awesome!" while I'm like, "Um, ok." What I mean is that I guess it's something that I take for granted.

But tbqh I would not be able to stand living in a subdivision/apartment like most people who are here probably do. I would compare it to living in a beehive, actually.

Um, silence FTW!

I thought you lived near Nashville or something...

But then again I think I blatantly assume anyone else who lives in TN I know online lives "near Nashville".

I live "near Nashville." 3 hours away. Same distance that Memphis is. Yeah.

Everyone here: I love you guys a lot sometimes. Happy Lune

I live about four hours from Nashville and um, probably 8 or 9 to Memphis. I've never been there, but it's the complete opposite end of the state.

man, why'd you have to bring up kanon
i hate that show

I find it odd that this topic was brought up just a couple of days ago. Last night I went to a small group with a few friends from church, and the actual topic of the night was basically just get rid of the noise in your life and learn to just stop and listen.

Which is pretty exhilarating to do, actually.

You hate a Kyoto Animation anime? BLASPHEMY!

Then again, you could just hate Key games.

P.S. Why do you hate it? This is the opening from the 2006 version of Kanon, so if it was because of the animation, it's by a different animation studio than the 2002 version was.

I've never seen bigger, stupid Anime eyes on a "serious" anime character EVER BEFORE. Wow.

Quiet makes you think of big-eyed, small-mouthed women moving in slow motion in the snow?

Seen Clannad yet? The Clannad After Story episodes start airing next week.

Anyway, I thought of Kanon when you (Blank) mentioned "A quiet city with snow falling.." because that's the setting prior to the main character's arrival.
