I knew that my great uncle Leigh Harline worked for Disney studios and wrote When You Wish Upon a Star, so I threw his name into YouTube and apparently he did some of the songs in Snow White, as well. So I'm listening to Some Day My Prince Will Come. See? I should pursue a career in music, it's genetic! I wonder if my family will buy that.

Ne'er 'eard of 'im.
My knee-jerk response to any and all cover versions is to state immediately, "I prefer the original" regardless of the quality thereof. Smile

Are there any good cover versions? Of anything? Ever? DISCUSS!

Also: I'm listening to New Order. But I somewhat wish I wasn't.

The Bonamassa version's pretty good! He's a newer blues guitarist. I hadn't heard the Tull version before (my knowledge of them doesn't go back quite that far), but it's hard to say which is better.

That doesn't always mean it's better, though. Case in point: Oasis prefers Ryan Adams' cover of "Wonderwall", which sucks arse.

Personally, I think many of Weird Al's polka covers have improved upon the originals. Razz

But it is better.

Also the question was "are there any good covers of anything?" They don't have to be better. Just good.

Was genuinely going to post exactly this before I scrolled down and saw your post.

Feel the need to contribute anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyJeC99QO8A

Currently listening to: that song I just posted

EDIT: And on the same theme, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMUTiASn2B8

Oh, and basically everything by Easy Star All-Stars and the Baseballs. Look 'em up, they're both a blast Very Happy

Doesn't matter whose version it is, I find "Hallelujah" intolerably irritating in any and every case. It's like "Bridge Over Troubled Water" but without a good melody.
I try to be indifferent about it in a whatever-floats-your-boat sort of way, but sometimes I feel I need to make a stand... surely I'm not the only one? Razz

Is there a polka version of it? I'd be interested in THAT... Very Happy

He rocked my WILLY. Although the audience was full of assholes (even excluding myself). Sweetly enough he hung around to say hello after the show, so I was able to offer him a greeting and moderately enthusiastic hand-shake, happy in the knowledge that there was absolutely no possibility of him ever remembering me*.
The best part was MR. FANCY PANTS.
Also the knowledge that he was playing on the same stage as I'd played on months earlier with my own band made me feel disproportionately SMUG </gloat>.

*With this in mind, I pulled his trousers down and blew him off.

k.d. lang's and Bon Jovi's versions of Hallelujah are my favourites. Rufus Wainwright's never really struck me as being particularly outstanding. Don't know why.

While we're on the subject of covers, I quite enjoy Oingo Boingo's take on You Really Got Me.

I've been listening to a few new albums recently; One Of The Boys by Katy Perry, I Told You I Was Freaky by Flight of the Conchords, and The Fame by Lady Gaga. All are good. Very Happy

I'm rockin' out to TMBG's Demo Version of "Which Describes How You're Feeling." It's so much better than the album version.

Listening to Rocky Votolato! Saw him last night. He's a folk singer/songwriter. If you're into that stuff, definitely check out his album "Makers". It's beautiful. He was a pretty cool guy live, too. So nice.
