I think Izzhov and I (and a little bit of Dr F) are the only ones who play Audiosurf here, but I am making this thread anyway because the game is amazing. (And yes. The game. That's right, you just lost.)
Has anyone else played it before? I kind of don't want this thread to just turn into a thread of me and Izzhov talking about songs we should play / have played. _________________ when the world is sick, can't no one be well? but i dreamt we was all beautiful and strong

As if to invite people to pull a "let me Google that for you" on me, what the hell's Audiosurf?
I refuse to Google it, I want you to tell me. _________________ ~Lester Square |

It's a PC puzzle game of sorts. You move along a racetrack and hit different colored blocks. And you want to get clusters of 3 or more of the same color of blocks (a la Bejeweled). Each track you play is unique and based off of a song in your own music library (you choose the song of course). I guess the game runs some kind of algorithm to create it. Intense, loud, and/or heavy-beat kind of songs have really fast tracks and/or more blocks, and slow quiet songs have slow tracks. And the tracks vary over the course of the song, too. Usually most songs have a mixture of both fast and slow areas.
The game has an online scoring system of leaderboards, too, and some free songs that get updated every week-ish for everyone to compete on if you happen to want to compete but don't have much music that other people play.
In short, it's a puzzle game BASED ON YOUR OWN MUSIC COLLECTION. Which is one of the coolest things ever imo.
Here's a video I made yesterday of playing a song. Just to give you a feel for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9h8L5GRT0c There are also different 'characters' you play as, which basically just means there are different special things you can do. My guy can erase one color of blocks at a time, and make them reappear. Another can pick up blocks to use for later, another can move blocks over one column... etc. _________________ when the world is sick, can't no one be well? but i dreamt we was all beautiful and strong

Damian gave a pretty good description of it. But bear in mind that there is a mode you can play that isn't puzzle based: if you play Mono ode the strategy is just to get the colored blocks and avoid grey ones. A lot of people like to play that if they just want to sit back and enjoy the music more but imo if you don't play any of the other characters at all you're really missing out.
Speaking of which, here's a video I made of me playing a different character, so you can see the variety of things you can do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GYEH39aVR8 This is the one that can push blocks over one column.
Listen guys, the game only costs $10 (which is only 6 and a half pounds); it is totally worth it to buy it.
EDIT: also bear in mind that both Damian and I were playing on the hardest difficulty; there are easier modes you can start out on!

I played it a couple years ago, got kinda sorta not really into it. It's okay, but you know me and video games...
I'd rather go sailing. =P
Sorry, don't mean to crash your thread. Yeah, as video games go, it's pretty good. _________________ Compassion is the radicalism of our time.

Yeah, I gave it a thorough YouTube investigation after seeing Damian's video. Looks pretty interesting--possibly the most clever adaptation of Tetris I've ever seen--though I have the feeling it's not designed with weird '70s prog rock in mind! But ear-friendly techno-beats (Kraftwerk!!!) seem to come out pretty well. _________________ ~Lester Square |

Actually, most any music works fairly well on it; that's the beauty of the game! It's just that the experience will probably be a bit more mellow if you're going to be doing stuff like "On Thin Ice" or "Comfortably Numb." _________________ BRAND NEW FCMidi Forums! |

Well, if my weird-ass music tastes make the game easier, then so be it! I feel so vindicated!
I am actually interested. Might even buy it. And this coming from a guy who can't even remember the last time he *bought* software.
PC software anyway. Console games don't count. ;)
EDIT: Fuck me, it's £2.16 on Amazon, I am absolutely BUYING this BASTARD. _________________ ~Lester Square |

You bought it! That's ORSHUM.
Also, depending on your particular selection of prog rock, you can have a pretty fun ride. Sometimes it's easier, hell, sometimes not. A lot more ups and downs, though, for sure. _________________ when the world is sick, can't no one be well? but i dreamt we was all beautiful and strong

| One thing is, a significant amount of guitar distortion can make the ride really in-tents, even if the distortion is more ambient than overdriven. Just try Maserati's "Show Me the Season" if you need any proof of this. x_x |

Am installing it RIGHT NOW!
Except, WTF is all this "STEAM" bullshit about? I want to play a game, not install some crazy-ass chatroom program or whatever the buggering hell it is.
Will update you soon on what it's like to play the game with KIRBY MUSIC. _________________ ~Lester Square |

It's just a program that runs a lot of games. Think of it as a video game console, only it's made of software instead of hardware, and it's free. |

Izzhov:
One of the most in tents songs I've played is Scatman John's "Scatman's World", I just found out. 293 traffic. Oh jeez. It's ca-razy. _________________ when the world is sick, can't no one be well? but i dreamt we was all beautiful and strong

Damian:
That is a crazy amount of traffic. The highest traffic song I ever played was "Holic" by TaQ, which has 316 traffic. I will check out this Scatman John.
Lester:
So, what's Kirby music like on Audiosurf??? _________________ BRAND NEW FCMidi Forums! |

Most of the Scatman songs are incredibly high traffic. They're SO FUN. :O I was surprised. _________________ when the world is sick, can't no one be well? but i dreamt we was all beautiful and strong

Wow, I failed out halfway through that 17-minute track on Audiosurf Radio because of the not-really-overfilling glitch. Ugh. _________________ when the world is sick, can't no one be well? but i dreamt we was all beautiful and strong

I BOUGHT YOU MACHINARIUM! PLAY IT YOU OMFGREDTEXT-LICKER! _________________ Eiríksmál is a skaldic poem composed sometime in 954 in honour of slain consort Erik Bloodaxe.
What's being said, what's in your head, what's in the words that we believe?
Bop to the sound, drop what you've got -- 'cause it's a song inside of me.
I can see your face, I can feel the sea, I see that it's a part of me.
Let's break the trance, let's make 'em dance and see what we are meant to be!
Might be the end, might be the start, could be the air that lies between.
Could be this song, could be the beat, could be the words that set you free.
You say believe, I don't believe, I can't believe in what you say.
I'd rather be a part of me, a part that you? You'll never see.
