So, yeah. Having bought this new Win7 laptop I'm slowly realising that I can actually play PC games again (since the old compy had basically no RAM or hard disk space whatsoever), although I'm disinclined to spend any money on them. Anybody know of any downloadable/online games that are completely worth my time? What are all the cool kids playing these days? Mr Green

LinCity and FreeCiv if you like city builders.

If you're into first person shooters, America's Army is good, but very hard. It's probably the most realistic shooter out there, so if you're not into waiting for a long time only to get shot in the face, it's probably not your game. It's more preparing for shots and moving about and working with teammates than it is actually shooting.

There's also F.E.A.R. Combat and Tribes Next FPS-wise. Then there's Battlefield Heroes and Quake Live which are browser-based.

Mightier is an adventure game. Battle For Wesnoth if you're into RPGs. Tag is a shooter in the same sense that Portal is. And Cave Story, which you probably know about.

I heartily recommend you download Ben There, Dan That. It's a freeware point and click adventure much like the LucasArts games of yore, and IMO the script is on a par with them. The puzzles aren't particularly difficult, but goddamn is it funny.

Ben There, Dan That is great, and I second Wormy's recommendation. But if you're into hilarious point and click adventure games, you just can't go wrong with Out of Order. With its sardonic Adams-esque writing and eccentric cast, it has actually won awards. And it is completely and utterly free as you requested. Download your copy today!

This is the only PC game I've played in many months.

Oh, and I just realized that when Orni mentioned Cave Story he didn't nearly do it justice. THIS IS THE GREATEST FREEWARE GAME OF ALL TIME. PLAY IT NAO. Make sure you download the English patch too if you can't read Japanese.

If you like both Cave Story and Nethack, then I also heartily recommend Spelunky. It's a randomly generated cave-explorin' platformer with RPG elements. You'll be dyin' a lot, but you won't get frustrated since the experience is never the same twice!

Thanks for all the recommendations, you guys! I'm happy to report that I'm now completely addicted to Mightier, which is wonderful. I've downloaded Ben There but I haven't installed it yet. Will check out some of the others in good time. These were exactly the sorts of things I was after. Very Happy

If you're into MMOs, give Perfect World a go. It's f2p with very little reliance on cash items (unless you wanna go crazy-high-level PK or something). The site will show you an oceanic theme, but that's just their new expansion; the vast bulk of the game takes place on a chinese-inspired mainland (because the design and code, in fact, comes directly from China - the company who runs the international version is just a licensee).

I would describe it as "WoW-esque with less fail." Specifically, because the (lack of) color brightness won't rape your eyeballs, while still managing to look great (especially with your graphic settings up). And of course, WoW is a subscription game whereas PWI is f2p. Razz
