Hey guys,

It's the last week of fcmidi. I know the forums have been almost inactive for about a year, but it's still pretty sad to see the boards just disappear from the internet. I think I speak for all of us when I say that our time here was pretty special. So, in this last week of fcmidi's life, I think it'd be appropriate to give a 'homily' of sorts to the friends we made and the times we had on the site.

I dunno when I started going to fcmidi, because it was in-between going to KV, but I know it's been many, many years at this point. Over time, I've become a part of almost all of your lives, in a very passive way - I watched as you guys matured, found girlfriends, wives, and careers, and slowly became the people that you are today. Not all of you are done growing, but I'm glad to say that you've all became people I'm proud to have once called my (online) friends.

There were some good times, and some bad times, but all in all this forum was always a friendly, fun place that we went to relax and enjoy the company of a bunch of like-minded people. It's sad - communities like this don't seem to exist anymore... but even if they did, it'd never be the same. Fcmidi was a part of my childhood and my growing up, and as silly as it sounds, I doubt I'll ever forget this little community.

Yeah man, this goes back to me being 13 years old. I was a little one. I grew up a looot over these few years, changed a lot, probably with good help from several of you. Seeing us all grow up has been really interesting. WE ALL MUST STAY IN TOUCH SOMEHOW

Can anyone else hear the music? ...no? Just me? Crying or Very Sad

All kidding aside, I remember Fruitz less for these forums and more for the random debauchery which took place offline between us and the other offline buggers, most of whom don't go here anymore. I mean, we need a roundup of all those past peeps to come here and say goodbye. Razz And then join the stupid IRC thingy.

That said, the forums have been a place of awesomeness as well. I'll always remember the debates... but more importantly, the style of humor here is like nothing else on the intarwebz, and that's what I'm gonna miss the most. Anger Lune

Btw, I voted the third option. What ridiculous polls? There was no such thing. Kyth

In addition, I must quote the following post from August 2008 because it cannot be quoted enough times.

Nearly two years ago, Damian wrote:

Hey guys this is exactly what doesn't need to happen. IRC, especially when channels are just starting out, is populated by people idling (I idle 24/7), that is they aren't always there. Don't join and get disgruntled and leave after like five minutes. If ALL OF US can communally choose to idle in there and check back, eventually some kind of typical schedule will work itself out and we will have a thriving channel.

On a less repetitive note, it's been fun, y'all. Stay in touch or else. Cool

Mm, I actually don't, but I remember when Izzhov was literally every other post. (I think I missed Damian's big explosion into the world)

God, I wish we could go back to those times on fcmidi, when people cared enough about silly little things like someone posting "too much".

And CM, as soon as you posted that picture I heard that ominous ticking, and then the song of healing (because of course my mind had to pick the saddest MM song).

If this was the olden days, Izzhov and I would proceed to get into a 5-page argument (mostly over PMs) about whether or not the song of healing was actually the saddest MM song, whether it's fair to make blanket statements about subjective matters, and whether subjectivity actually exists, or if it's just a flawed interpretation of objective facts, skewed by our own experiences.

What about all these cute little fruitcake emoticons? No forum ever in the history of the internet or humanity is ever going to have fruitcakes with smiley faces. It just won't exist, and that's a sad, sad thought.

Sad

Le sigh.

EVERYONE WHO DIDN'T VOTE FOR THE LAST OPTION ON THE POLL IS A TREACHEROUS SCUMBAG.

That aside, this is all a bit sad, isn't it? Admittedly I haven't been posting at anything like a regular rate for quite a long time (for which I can point the blame squarely at lately having become a busy person for the first time in my life), and perhaps getting sad and nostalgic over an internet forum is as lame as a duck with a dead political career. But on the other hand, these forums have been part of my life since - God, I don't even know. 2004? Something like that, since I was a little tyke with no business at all being on the Internet. I fell in love with the community as soon as I found it, and the unquantifiable FCMidi spirit has stayed with the place through thick and thin, through members leaving (sometimes permanelty) and coming back ("YOU'LL NEVER LEAVE!", as Wormy's logo reminds me), flame wars and server crashes. It sounds schlocky, but I grew up here. God knows I'd be embarrassed to read some of my output from 5 years ago (wouldn't we all?), but I'm convinced the debate and discussion did wonders to open my mind and re-evaluate my outlook on life, and I somehow feel I'd be less of a person if not for this place. So, thanks. Smile

All that's left for us now is specific nostalgia. Remember clutch, guys? Pretty wacky!

Clutch? I remember clutch every time I climb into my new sports sedan and gently caress all three pedals with my toes AND THEN SQUEAL MY 245/45 LOW-PROFILE, FAT, PAVEMENT-CHEWING TIRES COURTESY OF 255 HORSES SQUEEZED INTO 3489 CUBIC CENTIMETERS OF JAPANESE GOODNESS. LET ME RACE YOUUUUUUUU. My car and all parts were ACTUALLY MADE IN JAPAN! Does that not blow your mind!? http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs437.snc3/25118_378647440833_698995833_4228557_4611691_n.jpg <-- On our way back home from some suburb of Columbus, OH. Yes, it's beige at the moment. Soon as I get married and get these pesky car payments out of the way, that suckers either going LeMans sunset orange or this nice dark blue that my Maxima could have come in.

But, um, clutch was a Upsilon joke account? Oh, wait.. Upsilon, make a joke account? Hahaha! He's far too serious to do anything like that.

Let's see.. Moved to Louisville in 1999 at age 10, got broadband internet in late 2000, found VGMA while searching for Vectorman music, joined those forums in mid '02 at age 13? I don't remember what prompted me to join here. I knew of the Dr. Fruitcake guy, and liked him (who doesn't? BESIDES LOCKHEED-MARTIN, AMIRITE? LOLOL) and joined because I had been proclaimed a post whore by someone in a MechWarrior 4 community/clan I was in. I didn't know what whore meant and looked it up in the dictionary ROFL Lune and still didn't understand it was supposed to be mildly offensive. Ah, naiveté, when will I ever grow out of you?

All I remember is FCMIDI was born in January or something of '03 and I joined in March. Calle was a moderator and Dutch. The Lunch Table Crew was alive and well and creating bangin' awesome RP threads. My brain still refuses to work a lot, but the RP thread concerning the bar was, easily, the best RP thread to ever have been concocted on any forum EVAR. I miss Mr. Ian the Commodore. Is he doing well?

My favorite memories stemmed from the innocent wackiness that prevailed in this place, as someone just mentioned about this place's unique sense of humor--an extremely lofty claim for our planet of 6.7 billion drones who are so alike it's best not to think on it too hard. But one that, amazingly, I'd agree with! I still say ROTFLMABBQ at times, a butchering of the original, but as close as my brain had stored, to weird looks all 'round. The humor shifted with the influx of younger folk to one that more closely matched 4chan, but 4chan wasn't cool anymore around that time, so it's all good.

I STILL RAMBLE, GENTLEMEN! Some things will never ever ever change.

Favorite random connection: Kyle Wilson, pimp-dog cousin of the Greens, joined the forums as, um, KyleWilson. He had a racecar avatar and now sells Subarus! Anywhos, I knew him, it turns out, from earlier in our lives as LittleSuckyKid44 (the exact number escapes me), the gifted MechWarrior 4 pilot and member of a clan that was quite friendly with mine. (Have you ever seen a Daishi bent over a Thanatos in the thralls of sex? It's scarring, dude.)

What happened to Purpurrot and Heifer? Now THERE was a pair of extremely interesting characters.

Edit @Upsilon: And I doubt I'll ever be comfortable reading things I've written from more than 12 months ago--sometimes not even that!

Clutch was started by Lester, but I think he was about five different people by the end, as more and more people figured it out and got in on the joke.

Yeah, that's why I changed mine. This is the last forum that I'll probably ever use this Yoshi avatar on.

I was reminiscing about the first video game forum I ever went to, the Odyssey of Hyrule. I went to one of the classic articles on it, and heard this song, which plays at the end of a link to the past. It just seemed so fitting, I thought I'd share it, since this is basically the end of my online adventure as chzrm3.

Lynk's linked picture is dead. His classic is the adorable tiger one. Hump the tiger Lynk! Hump it good!

Not sure where my animated Epyon is dwelling these days, so here's another one I had on Photobucket. 1337 posts on the GORGEOUS SpacePilot3K theme that no longer exists here. That was FCMIDI 2.0, I think. Right? A refresh in '04 would be the first, I think.

Guys, you're going to think this is really lame, but I actually had a dream that I went onto fcmidi and saw a post from Fruitcake saying "APRIL LULZ, FCMIDI IS HERE TO STAY!!!!!!!!!!! (with 11 exclamation points in back of it)"

So when I came onto the site just now for a few seconds I was like "yay what a relief it's not going away : D" and then I realized it was all a dream. Q_Q

Let's play sad, nostalgic video game songs!

Welp, I don't know if I really have room to write much here, seeing as all I ever did was post a bunch of obnoxious shit then run off to deviantart. (then come back for like a week then slip off out of embarrassment again WOOPS)

But yeah you guys were a major part of my early adolescence and pretty much my introduction to the internet, so I'm really sad to see this place go. Is there anywhere to exchange emails/messengers? I'd like to get back in touch with people even when after the forum is down.

Good night, fcmidi. It was pretty great.
